The Utah State Bar provides excellent advice on things you should consider before hiring an attorney. You may want to check whether the attorney is licensed and in good standing with the Utah State Bar. You can also check whether the attorney has any complaints filed against him/her.

Also make sure that if you retain an attorney for a particular matter, that the attorney explains in detail his/her billing practices. There are many different billing structures. The attorney should have you sign a retainer agreement setting forth his/her billing practices. If you are clear on the billing and know what to expect, it will decrease any possible tension between you and your attorney in the future.
